Choosing a home inspector can be a daunting task. With all of the marketing hype you see such as "Certified", "Insured", "Bonded", "Licensed", "Member of XYZ Organization" etc. etc. how do you know you will actually be hiring a home inspector that can do the job to protect you.

If the truth be known, it takes very little to become a home inspector. In North Dakota you can become a Registered Home Inspector by passing a short test that my wife, who is a dental hygienist passed and provide proof of insurance. This can be done within a few days and you are a Home Inspector. In Minnesota you can become a Home Inspector as fast as the printer can print up the business cards. No requirements are needed. Want to add several designations behind your name, no problem, get out your checkbook and join one or more of the home inspector organizations. Scary, you bet!

Yes, you may save a few dollars by hiring a "Cheap Charlie" but in the long run that home inspection will always cost you more. A way that makes sense to you and does not scare you. You also need an inspector that will be there for you after you move in. Someone you can call with questions and get an unbiased answer. I always tell my clients that when you hire me you are my customer for life. Don't settle for less.
